NHS South West Essex

NHS South West Essex (PCT) is a new organisation launched on 1 October 2006, following the merger of the former Basildon; Billericay, Brentwood and Wickford; and Thurrock PCTs.  It is one of 152 PCTs that cover all parts of England and receive their budgets directly from the Department of Health and is responsible for the healthcare of more than 420,000 people across the boroughs of Basildon, Brentwood and Thurrock.  It is responsible for planning, developing and buying or providing all healthcare services, including hospital and mental health care as well as supporting the development of the services from GPs, dentists, pharmacists and optometrists.  Their role is to ensure that there are enough GPs to provide for the area and make certain that other health services including hospitals, dentists, mental health care, NHS Direct, patient transport (including accident and emergency), screening, pharmacies and opticians are all available.
